    Any tips to enhance your conversations with your teen? My daughter hardly talks to me and rarely shares anything me. How can we improve our communication?

    Jeena Roseline Apr 11 2019

    @Jeena Roseline Dear Parent,

    Kudos for wanting to help your teen become more expressive! Adolescence is an age where the teen turns more toward her peers than parents. It is possible that your daughter is very communicative to her friends but gives one word answers to you (or simply grunts in response). This is completely natural and healthy. However, you can definitely take some steps in helping your teen become more expressive toward you:

    Talk regularly with your teen. To draw your teen in, it is a good idea to have ongoing & regular conversations with her. Chat during ad breaks about your favourite parts of the TV show, during dinner about the best part of your day, during car rides about her favourite activities. The idea if to find everyday situations and have casual conversations but which have the potential to keep you connected to your teen.

    Have her voice her opinions and choices. Give your teen the space to make choices on a daily basis. Ask her whys he made a particular choice. Encourage her to use I statements, such as I feel, I think, etc. Dont dismiss her opinions when you dont agree with them, simply voice your own opinions respectfully.

    Encourage journaling. Journaling is a very effective way of expressing ones thoughts and feelings. Encourage your teen to journal her day-to-day activities, which will ultimately help her clarify and uncover her thoughts and feelings, and empower her with self-knowledge.

    Use non-judgmental language. Teens can get put off by adults who sounds preachy and patronizing. If you want your teen to become expressive toward you, keep your judgments on the back burner and respond to your teen with empathy. It doesnt mean you condone everything your teen says or does, but it means that you avoid making judgments on her intent and respond to her thoughtfully.

    How can I speak to my 12 year old daughter about sex and rape?

    Team ParentCircle Mar 19 2019

    @Team ParentCircle Dear parent, talking about sexuality to pre-teens can be quite challenging. However, it is extremely important to have sexuality conversations with your pre-teen and teen on an ongoing basis. It is best to have the conversations when you are engaged in something else - such as driving her to her hobby class, or when doing household chores together. Start by asking what she already knows about sex. You can use an incident in news or in real-life as a reference point to start your conversation. Give her age-appropriate facts about sex in an objective manner. Dont laugh or make fun of her questions, no matter how silly they may seem to you. Reassure her that if she has a doubt, she can always come to you to clarify. While its important that you share your moral and religious values with her, refrain from being preachy and patronising.
    Also, talk to your daughter about consent. Read articles with her which explain consent in a simple manner, and have ongoing conversations about how misplaced societys concerns are (e.g., concern with victims attire, time of the day, etc.). Also, talk to her about how the focus on the victim to the exclusion of the perpetrator demonstrates a patriarchal mindset.
    Here is a good resource to help you have those delicate and sensitive conversations with your child:

    Need to know more scientific effects of using screensmentally and physically.

    Team ParentCircle Mar 19 2019

    @Team ParentCircle Screens are the boon and the bane of modern day existence. While technology can offer unlimited educational and entertainment opportunities, screens can be very harmful to our children, both mentally and physically. Following are some of the harmful effects of using screens, as demonstrated by research:
    Sleep disturbances: The light emitted from the screens interferes with sleep cycle in children and leads to weakening of the immune system. Children who watch screens before bedtime have been shown to suffer from disturbed sleep.
    Problems in appetite: These days a lot of kids refuse to eat their meals without TV, computer, or mobile. This leads to a number of problems: watching ads for processed food products increase the consumption of such foods, leading to obesity. Also, eating food while focusing on screens leads to passive eating and ignoring hunger and satiety cues, leading to either under or overeating.
    Inactive lifestyle: Increase in screen time in children is linked to decreased physical activity and outdoor play. The sedentary lifestyle is in turn a risk factor for a number of diseases, including childhood obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
    Attentional deficits: Children with a high exposure to screen use have also been shown to suffer from attentional problems, such as the inability to demonstrate both focused and sustained attention. This has a direct bearing on their academic and other pursuits. For example, children with higher exposure to screens are more likely to read fewer books and have lower grades.
    Social behaviour: Exposure to violent content on screens has been demonstrated to cause desensitisation to violence, and increase the probability of children using violence in interpersonal situations. Overall social behaviour is also likely to suffer as children with higher exposure to screens (who also have fewer face-to-face interactions) are less likely to interpret social cues and human emotions.
    Vision impairments: To childrens already sensitive eyes, exposure of long durations to screens can cause dryness, eye fatigue, and impairments in visual acuity.
    Inappropriate content: Children who watch screens for a longer duration and are less likely to be actively supervised by caregivers may more likely come across age-inappropriate content, which may have a harmful impact on their psyche. It also exposes them to content depicting sexuality, substance use, or violence.

    What to do when the child is adamant, like in the role play and goes on arguing that phone usage does no harm and was pushing the mum to prolong the conversation for a very long time?

    Team ParentCircle Mar 19 2019

    @Team ParentCircle Dear parent,

    It can be really trying when children go on arguing and dont give up! The simple rule about having difficult conversations with children is to not enter into power struggles with them. The child might just be trapping the parent in arguments, which do not yield any beneficial results. Instead, when you encounter a potentially challenging situation with your child, think about this: what is the rule regarding that situation or behaviour? If the rule has not been decided yet, involve all the family members, including the child himself, in formulating the rule. If the child doesnt agree to your suggestions, negotiate with him (this will also teach him to negotiate in interpersonal interactions with his peers, instead of fighting). Also, mutually decide on the consequences if those rules are broken. These steps will ensure that when difficult conversations do happen, the rules are clear and if broken, the consequences can be doled out without any argument or resentment. For example, in the above situation, if the limit for screen time has been set for 30 minutes, the screen has to be taken away and shut down after that time limit, no matter what. This does not leave scope for the discussion about the harms of phone use, which can be had later, and not when the rule is being enforced.

    How do I instill positive thinking and confidence in my 12 year old child ? Also he is scared to sleep alone !!

    meera manjunath Nov 23 2018

    @meera manjunath There are lot of books and videos that help with positive thinking. All of us work hard to be positive, think positive, and sound positive ..aren't we.. Only when we are happy, we can make others happy they say. So same goes with positive thinking...To influence a child, let's use positive words and speak calmly and confidently. Praise him whenever you find him working hard or when he does something good. Be very patient; try not to sound stressed. Even when issues crop up, tell him how he can calmly think and find the best solution.
    Encourage him to speak and listen until he finishes. Respect his views. Ask him what he thinks about different topics and let him speak. Ask him suggestions and follow it and tell him it was a great idea. Encourage him to participate in different stage activities. Ask him for help and thank him. All this will build his self confidence.

    Sleeping alone --for a start, stay until he falls asleep and leave. Use a night lamp. Chances are he will wake up sometime to avoid sleeping alone. Keep trying. Take him back to his place and stay until he falls asleep. Repeat this for a few days. Little kids get attached to a toy like Teddy bear or something and keep it in the bed to feel secure.. Since he is a little bigger, try and see what works.
    Even if he sleeps alone for one day, praise him and tell him that he can do it again and again.
    Hope all these suggestions help:-)

    Maintain "Gadget-free" zones and times within your home and follow them strictly as a family.

    Be it the dining hall or the play area, mark certain zones at home and times where no one in the family is allowed to use gadgets. Encourage any other creative activities and discussions with family during this time.
