Relationships are a vital part of our lives. The moments we spend in the company of those dear to us become invaluable experiences and stay in our hearts as cherished memories.
One of the most important and beautiful of relationships is that between siblings, especially between brother and sister. In India, we honour the bond a brother and sister share by celebrating it as the festival of Rakshabandhan.
The word Rakshabandhan is made up of two Sanskrit words 'Raksha' and 'Bandhan'. Translated into English, Rakshabandhan means the 'knot of protection'. This festival is celebrated on the last day of the ‘Shraavana’ month of the Hindu Calendar.
There are many stories about the origin of this festival. However, its significance lies in strengthening and honouring the brother–sister bond. No other relationship is as vibrant and nurturing as the one siblings share. As a parent, you need to teach your children how they can support, encourage, protect and stand by each other.
