Nature-Themed Fancy Dress Costume Ideas For Kids

Children love exploring their natural surroundings and take a lot of interest in flowers, trees, birds, animals and bugs. Encouraging children to learn about the environment and its conservation can put them on the path to adopting habits that help preserve nature.

Nature-themed fancy dress costume ideas are not only a lot of fun but also help children strengthen their bond with the flora and fauna around them. That is why fancy dress ideas based on objects from nature can be a remarkable learning experience for children.

Here are some interesting nature-themed fancy dress costumes you can try making for your child:

Tree fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Cardboard
  • Green paper
  • Brown paper
  • Glue
  • A pair of scissors
  • Brown T-shirt and trousers

How to make a Tree fancy dress:

  • Cut out a large circular piece of the cardboard to resemble the trunk of a tree.
  • On one side of the circle, cut a hole big enough to fix around your child’s head.
  • Cut out leaf shapes from the green paper and stick them on the cardboard. Stick them in a way that they overlap each other to give a natural look.
  • On the T-shirt and trousers, stick strips of brown paper to resemble the bark of a tree.
  • Cut shapes of a fruit of your choice to stick to the green portion.
  • Make your child wear the T-shirt and trouser and fix the cardboard onto her head.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m a tree and I give you shade and fresh air to breathe. Don’t waste paper. Save trees!”

Earth fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Large sheets of foam (about 1/2 inch thick)
  • Green felt paper (about 1/2 inch thick)
  •  Blue cloth
  • Printed maps of continents
  • Glue
  • Glue gun
  • Velcro

How to make the Earth fancy dress:

  • Cut out two circles from the foam. Make sure they are large and wide enough to cover your child from below her neck up to her lower thighs. You will need to hang the circles at the front and back of your child.
  • On the top side of each circle, cut out small semicircles. These should be large enough to fit around your child’s neck.
  • Cut holes on either side of one circular piece for your child’s hands to go through.
  • Stick the blue cloth on both the circles with the help of the glue gun.
  • Trace the outlines of the maps onto pieces of felt paper and cut them out.
  • Using the glue gun, stick the maps on both the circles to resemble a globe.
  • Attach the Velcro pieces to the inside of both the circles.
  • Secure both the large circular pieces together using the Velcro. Your child can wear this costume as he wears his T-shirt.
  • He can wear blue leggings / trousers with a blue T-shirt for a more natural look.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m planet Earth. Keep me clean and take care of me, and you will have a wonderful place to live.”

Moon fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Large pieces of cardboard
  • Rope
  • A pair of scissors
  • Glue
  • Yellow, silver paint
  • Silver sparkles
  • Grey clothing

How to make a Moon fancy dress:

  • Cut out two large circles from the cardboard. Make sure they are large and wide enough to cover your child from below her neck up to her lower thighs.
  • Paint the cardboard to make it look like the moon’s surface. You can add some sparkles for extra effect.
  • You need to hang the circles at the front and back of your child. So, make two small holes on one side of each circle.
  • Pass the ropes through the holes of the circles to tie them together.
  • The ropes will sit on your child’s shoulders. So, one piece of cardboard would hang in the front and the other one at the back.
  • Make your child wear grey-coloured clothes and then make him wear the moon.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m the moon. I light up the night sky, and I wax and wane.”

Cloud fancy dress

Materials required:

  • 1 sheet white chart paper
  • Plain white top
  • Plain white trouser
  • Plain white shoes or sneakers
  • Old skull cap (in any light colour)
  • 1 roll cotton wool
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Craft scissors
  • Light blue sketch pen

How to make a Cloud fancy dress:

  • Take a sheet of chart paper and fold it horizontally in half. Make sure the fold is neat and both halves are equal.
  • With a pencil, draw a neat outline of a cloud on both sides of the folded chart paper. With the help of a pair of scissors, cut out the cloud shape, ensuring the topmost side (the side with the fold) is left as it is. The cut-out should be large enough for your child to slip her head through the hole and wear the cloud on her upper body.
  • Now, cut a clean hole about 6 inches long, in the middle of the folded side.
  • Draw a few water droplets on the bottom part of the cloud with the blue sketch pen.
  • Put glue all over the skull cap and stick bits of cotton wool to fully cover on the outside. Let it dry.
  • For the final look, make your little one wear the top, the trousers and the shoes. Slip the cloud cut-out over your child’s head.
  • Once the paper cloud is in place, let her wear the skull cap. The look will be complete.

Dialogue to say

“I am white and fluffy, and float in the sky. Sometimes, I turn grey and bring rain, making the parched earth lush green. I am a cloud.”

Earth fancy dress

Materials required:

  • 2 sheets of cardboard
  • Blue paint
  • Green felt paper
  • Maps of all the continents
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • A pair of scissors
  • Rope
  • Blue full-sleeved top/shirt
  • A pair of blue trousers

How to make the Earth fancy dress:

  • Cut two equally proportioned circles from the two cardboard sheets. The size of the circles should be big enough to cover your child’s upper body, specifically from the lower part of the neck to the thighs.
  • Paint the cardboard sheets with blue paint and keep them aside to dry.
  • With the help of maps and a sharp pencil, trace the different continents on individual sheets of green felt paper. Using glue, stick the corresponding felt paper continents to the cardboard circles on both sides to resemble a globe.
  • Once dry, make holes at the top of the cardboard circles and pass the rope through them, tying it securely.
  • The rope must attach both the circles in such a way that your child is easily able to wear the contraption by slipping his head between the ropes. The ropes should fall easily on your little one’s shoulders.

Dialogue to say:

“I am the planet which man has made his home. Protect me from the onslaught of man-made disasters and environmental problems and nurture me. I am the Earth.”

Rainbow fancy dress

Materials required:

  • White chart paper
  • Red-coloured ribbon
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • A pair of scissors
  • Stapler
  • Glue

How to make a Rainbow fancy dress:

  • Cut two equal semicircles from the chart paper, big enough to cover your child’s upper body.
  • Using water-based paint in VIBGYOR colours, paint U-shaped strips, one next to the other, to resemble a rainbow on both the semicircles.
  • Attach the rainbow semicircles to each other with the help of red ribbons.
  • From another chart paper, cut four equal-sized, fluffy clouds. Attach these to the ends of the rainbows with a stapler, two to each rainbow.
  • Make your child wear the rainbow costume, in such a way that the ribbons fall over the shoulder and the rainbows with the clouds at the end cover the upper body and thigh.

Dialogue to say

“I paint the sky in shades of violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. I make people smile when they look at me. I am a rainbow.”

Moon fancy dress

Materials required:

  • White shirt
  • A pair of white trousers
  • White shoes
  • White skull cap
  • Cardboard
  • White chart paper (thick)
  • Grey-coloured paint
  • Silver glitter
  • Rope
  • Glue

How to make a Moon fancy dress:

  • Cut two circles of the same size out of the cardboard. The size of the circles should be big enough to cover the portion of the body from your child’s neck to just above her knee.
  • Now, cut two circles from the chart paper of the same size.
  • Stick the chart paper circles over the cardboard pieces.
  • With the grey paint, make patterns on the circles to resemble craters. Add silver glitter to give a shiny look.
  • Make holes at the top of the circles and pass the rope through them. Ensure there’s enough gap between the two so that your child can wear the moon costume, with the rope over her shoulders and one circle covering her front and the other her back.
  • Make your child wear the shirt and the trousers, then the shoes and the skull cap, and then let her put on the moon costume.

Dialogue to say

“I am the Earth’s one and only natural satellite and I shine the brightest in the night sky. I am the Moon.”

Materials required:

  • Blue chart paper
  • A pair of scissors
  • Poster colours
  • Sketch pens
  • Thin rope

How to make a ‘Save water’ fancy dress:

  • Take the blue chart paper and cut it in the shape of a water droplet.
  • Make a small circular hole on the upper half of the droplet to fit your child’s head.
  • Make small holes on both sides of the droplet and pass two pieces of rope through them. Use these two ropes to tie the droplet around your child’s stomach.
  • Write some quotes on the droplet with sketch pens or poster colours. Here are some suggestions—“Save Water, Save Life” and “Every drop counts.”

Dialogue to say

“I am a precious resource and I give life to all beings on the Earth. Without me, you cannot live. Do not waste me. I am Water.”

  • 1 sheet thick chart paper (yellow)
  • A pair of scissors
  • Orange glitter paper
  • Red sketch pen
  • Yellow bodysuit/top and trousers
  • White shoes
  • Stapler

How to make a Sun fancy dress:

  • Trace a circle on the chart paper big enough to cover your child’s upper body.
  • Cut out the circle with the scissors.
  • Cut long triangles from the glitter paper.
  • Attach the triangles all around the circle with a stapler to represent the rays of the sun. You could also use a glue gun, but ensure that the triangles are neatly placed.
  • Draw a smiley face on the circle with the red sketch pen.
  • Make a hole in the upper half of the circle, to allow your child to put his head in.
  • Let your little one wear the bodysuit or the shirt and the trousers. Make him wear white shoes.
  • Place the sun costume carefully in front of your child’s body and let him slip his head into the hole. The sun costume is ready.

Dialogue to say

“I shine bright in the sky for all of you. I give precious light, heat and energy to all humans on the Earth. I am the Sun.”

Star fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Silver-coloured gift wrapping paper/silver-coloured foam glitter sheets
  • Cardboard
  • Silver-coloured bodysuit/silver shirt and slacks
  • Hairband
  • Shoelace
  • White shoes
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to make a Star fancy dress:

  • Cut a sheet of cardboard in the shape of a large star.
  • Stick the silver-coloured gift-wrapping paper over the cardboard star with glue to neatly cover it. Make sure there are no creases or breaks. Alternatively, you could also use foam glitter sheets.
  • Make a circular hole in the middle of the star, big enough for your child’s head to pass through easily.
  • Use a sharp object or scissors to make three small holes in the cardboard just above the circular hole (in the middle).
  • String a shoelace through these holes and carefully tie a hairband to the cardboard with the shoelace in such a way that it can fit on your child’s head.
  • Make your child wear a silver bodysuit and shoes. If the bodysuit is not available, let her wear a silver top and slacks/trousers instead.
  • Place the star around your child’s neck such that the hairband fits the head and her face is framed by the hole in the middle of the star.

Dialogue to say

“On a clear night, I twinkle in the sky like diamonds and give company to the Moon and planets. Look at me through binoculars and you can see me make patterns called constellations. I am a Star.”

Flower fancy dress

  • Red and pink construction paper
  • White mounting board/foam board
  • Glue gun
  • A pair of scissors/paper-cutter/ knife
  • Hairband
  • Shoelace
  • Green bodysuit/green top and trousers
  • Brown shoes

How to make a Flower fancy dress:

  • Make petals in three different sizes — small, medium and large using the red and pink construction paper.
  • Keep the mounting board on a flat surface and trace a circle right in the middle with a pencil. Cut out the circle with the knife to make a hole, big enough for your child’s head to pass easily.
  • Trace a large flower pattern on the mounting board.
  • Stick the construction paper petals on the board using hot glue, placing the large ones on the outside edge, the medium ones on the inner edge and the small ones on the innermost edge.
  • Make three small holes in the board just above the hole (in the middle) and pass the shoelace through the holes. Tie the hairband to the board with the shoelace, securing it at the back of the board.
  • This will make it easy for your child to wear the flower on her head, with the hole framing her face.
  • Let your child wear the green bodysuit or shirt and trousers, to give the natural look of a stem.
  • Make her wear the flower part of the costume with the help of the hairband. Finish the look with brown shoes.

Dialogue to say

“I am beautiful, delicate and colourful. I protect the seed and sometimes turn into a fruit that all of you can relish. I bring colour to your garden. I am a flower.”

Materials required:

  • Cardboard
  • Blue and green chart paper
  • Orange chart paper
  • Green and brown construction paper
  • Sketch pens
  • Cotton wool
  • Ribbon
  • Surgical mask

  • Blue T-shirt
  • Blue trousers

How to make a Global warming fancy dress:

  • Make flames out of the orange chart paper and shade with red sketch pen for a realistic look. Stick the paper flames all around the globe-like cardboard to represent global warming.
  • Make two holes at the top of the cardboard and pass the ribbon through it. This must be used to support the Earth on your child’s neck.
  • Make small letters of the alphabet from the white chart paper to spell ‘Can’t Breathe.’ Stick these to the front of the surgical mask.
  • Make small trees and shrubs with the green and brown chart paper.
  • Stick the cotton wool on the Arctic side of the globe to resemble receding glaciers and place the trees and shrubs at another end to represent vanishing forests. Write slogans or quotes under these to indicate the need to save the planet.
  • To put the costume together, make your child wear the clothes and the shoes, then let him hang the earth around his neck.

Dialogue to say

“The Earth is getting hotter because of harmful greenhouse gases, disappearing forests and widespread pollution. Reduce your carbon footprint and save the planet!”
