Learning Apps And Videos For Toddlers

In these digital times, the focus is often on education that is active, ongoing and accessible. Learning apps or educational apps for toddlers are applications for cell phones (or other gadgets) to facilitate age-appropriate learning. The content in these apps is supposedly interesting and enlightening, and holds a toddler’s attention without being addictive.

For a toddler, whose brain is like a sponge, learning apps can be exceptional tools for developing cognitive and fine motor skills, and learning different concepts, actions and emotions. They are often useful in keeping toddlers engaged while helping them to take their first baby steps on the road to learning.

There are various types of educational apps such as vocabulary apps, language apps, number apps, story-telling apps, apps about shapes and colours, music-based apps and so on.

While parents need to strictly monitor the amount of screen time they allow their toddlers, the time spent with gadgets like mobiles and tablets can be made productive through learning apps as they:

  • Allow children to be creative and use their imagination
  • Help develop hand-eye coordination
  • Keep children productively engaged and entertained
  • Introduce children to technology-based education
  • Teach different concepts such as shapes, colours, comparisons, opposites and so on
  • Demonstrate different emotions
  • Promote learning through fun

Technology-driven learning is becoming popular among children because it is captivating and interactive. Combining conventional learning with educational apps will enable a winning experience for your child. However, as a parent, you need to be careful about how much time your child spends with screen devices.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations for children’s media (2016), parents must avoid the use of screen media for children younger than 18 months, other than for video chats. The Academy recommends that, for children between 18 and 24 months of age, parents may introduce their little ones to digital media through high-quality content. However, parents should be with their children to help them understand what they see on the screen.

For children between the ages of 2 and 5, screen time must be limited to one hour per day of high-quality programmes.

Based on the guidelines, it can be summarised that, parents should:

  1. Ensure their toddler does not use a gadget for more than a few minutes at a time.
  2. Encourage their child to explore her surroundings, and learn and play through touch and feel method.
  3. Read books to their little one every day.
  4. Set aside a few hours every day to play and interact with their child without the use of gadgets.
  5. Keep certain spaces in the house gadget-free.
