IPL 2019: Players Who Made Their Parents Proud

When a sport becomes a religion, the followers will do anything to become the part of the game. In India, cricket is more than a sport and IPL is the biggest festival that celebrates it.

Over 12 seasons, IPL has changed the lives of many team players from across the country, by giving them a platform to showcase their talents. Following are some players who overcame odds to shine on the national stage and made their parents proud.

1. Player name: Mohammed Siraj

IPL 2019 team: Royal Challengers Bangalore

The day this right-arm pacer from Hyderabad got his IPL contract, he told his father to stop driving the autorickshaw. Unknown before 2016, Mohammed Siraj made a name for himself in the Ranji Trophy by taking 41 wickets in nine matches. Because of his performance, many teams bid for him and finally the Royal Challengers Bangalore sealed the deal with a winning bid of Rs 2.60 crores. When Siraj got his first IPL contract in 2018 he moved his father Mohammad Ghaus and mother Shabana Begum to a new house in Hyderabad.

2. Player name: Nathu Singh

IPL 2019 team: Delhi Capitals

The tattoo on Nathu Singh’s arm (the words ‘mom, dad’) declares to the world the love and devotion he feels for his parents. Hailing from Rajasthan, this fast bowler spent most of his time playing ‘gully cricket’ with a tennis ball. But his talent got noticed and his father, a labourer in a wire factory, invested all his savings to give their son an opportunity to play at an academy with a proper cricket ball. When he received his first match fee, he gave it all to his parents, and continues doing so till date. In 2016, he got picked up by Mumbai Indians for Rs 3.20 crores. This year, he will play for Delhi Capitals.

3. Player name: T Natarajan

IPL 2019 team: Sunrisers Hyderabad

Bowler T Natarajan from Salem, Tamil Nadu, had never anticipated that his life would change overnight. The eldest of five siblings, his mother worked in a roadside stall and his father was a daily-wage labourer. Used to playing with a tennis ball, Natarajan initially faced problems adjusting his grip on the cricket ball. But, soon his outstanding performance in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and the 2016-2017 Ranji Trophy grabbed the attention of selectors. His fortune changed when during the IPL 2017 auction, his bidding price went up to 30 times that of his base price of Rs 10 lakhs.

4. Player name: Sarfaraz Khan

IPL 2019 team: Kings XI Punjab

The story of batsman Sarfaraz Naushad Khan is no less inspiring than a movie script. Under the tutelage of his father and coach Naushad Khan, Sarfaraz broke several records in the world of cricket. Smarting from a ‘betrayal’ Naushad vowed that his son would become a world-class cricketer. Sarfaraz made his father’s dream come true by achieving the highest score in the Harris Shield inter-school tournament at the age of 12. Later he was also awarded the title of the ‘second highest run-scorer in the Under-19 World Cup’ in Bangladesh in 2016. And now, he has found his place in IPL 2019.

5. Player name: Shreyas Iyer

IPL 2019 team: Delhi Capitals

Hailing from Mumbai, it was initially tough for young batsman Shreyas Iyer to make a mark in a city that has raised many great cricketers. But soon his batting technique caught the attention of the selectors and he went on to become the highest-earning uncapped player at the 2015 IPL auctions.

6. Player name: Ravindra Jadeja

IPL 2019 team: Chennai Super Kings

For all-rounder Jadeja, it was his passion and love for the game that saw him beat all odds to come shining at the top. He made a mark in junior level cricket despite facing several financial predicaments, but the final blow came when he lost his mother at the age of 17. It was the dream of his mother to see her son play in the big leagues. Jadeja made her dreams come true through hard work and determination.

7. Player name: Rishabh Pant

IPL 2019 team: Delhi Capitals

Batsman Rishabh Pant lost his father two days before his team was set to play against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second season of IPL. It was a difficult decision for him, not only because he had lost his father, but also because his mother was recovering from a surgery. But Pant decided to play for his team and scored a half-century as well.

8. Player name: Kedar Jadhav

IPL 2019 team: Chennai Super Kings

The youngest sibling among four, Kedhar Jadhav defied norms by dropping out of school after the ninth grade. He was clear about his goals from the very beginning and got selected for the U-19 team in 2004. He made his IPL debut in 2013 with Delhi Daredevils and got an opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage in 2014.
