The moment you realise that you are going to become a parent is one of the most unforgettable ones. This realisation brings with it feelings of fear and joy, in equal amounts. But, if you have missed your periods and are still wondering whether you are pregnant or not, there’s an easy way to find out – take a home pregnancy test. These test kits are easily available at any drugstore and pregnancy test kit prices are fairly reasonable. Go through this article to find out how to use a pregnancy kit properly to get accurate results.
What are the types of pregnancy test kits available in India?
There are generally two types of pregnancy test kits available in India. They are:
- Strip pregnancy test kit– When using this type of pregnancy test kit, you need to hold the strip in the stream of urine. If you are not comfortable with that, you can collect a sample in a disposable cup and dip the strip in the urine. The colour of the strip will change if hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophins) is present in your urine.
- Cup Pregnancy test kit– In this method, you will be provided with a cup or test device on which you will need to pour a few drops of urine. You will get the results within three to five minutes.
How do home pregnancy test kits work?
Pregnancy test kits are used to detect the human chorionic gonadotrophins hormone found in a pregnant woman’s urine. The hCG hormone is produced by cells that help form the placenta for the baby. The hormone can be found approximately 6 to 14 days post fertilisation. Pregnancy test kits check for the presence of hCG in the urine to determine the results.
How to use the home pregnancy test kit effectively?
Home pregnancy test kits are easy to use and come with detailed instructions. All you need to do is collect your urine sample and follow the instructions given in the test kit. You have to make sure that the urine comes in direct contact with the stick or the strip. You could do this by collecting a sample, using a dropper, and putting a few drops on the stick.
When is the best time to take the test?
The home pregnancy test kits are the most accurate in the morning, as the urine is more concentrated when you pee for the first time in a day. However, if you are taking the test because you have missed your periods, you can test during any time of the day as by then the hCG levels are quite high and can be easily detected. Please give the test device three minutes before you check for results.
How soon can you check whether you are pregnant or not?
When you are taking a home pregnancy test, it’s advisable that you wait until you’ve missed your period. A home pregnancy test can give more accurate results then. But, if you have irregular period cycles, then it is best to do the test one week after the date you were supposed to have your periods.
Can pregnancy tests be inaccurate?
Yes. Though it’s more common to have false negatives than false positives. They happen when you test too early or if the test is not done correctly. If you get a negative, it’s advisable to take the test again after a few days, if you’ve still not got your period.
How can you tell if the test is positive or not?
If you get two dark lines on the test, it means that you are pregnant, but if you get one line, it means you are not. Some tests also have a ‘positive’ and a ‘negative’ sign to show the results. In case, you are still not sure about the home pregnancy detection kit, please consult your doctor.
