Five years ago, if anyone had told me that one day, I would be making pizzas like a pro, I wouldn’t have believed them. I had no idea how to make a pizza at home. Yet here I am today, making so many varieties of delicious pizzas just by playing around with the dough, cheese and veggies – so much so that we don’t order-in pizzas anymore!

Making pizzas at home is not so difficult after all. There are so many easy recipes you can try at home. Once you learn to make the base and sauce and get an idea of the exact baking time involved, you can start experimenting your pizzas with different varieties and combinations of toppings. And at the end of it all, you will feel good that you treated your kids to some home-cooked food rather than some junk take-out.

So, this article is all set to give you simple, step-by-step instructions to follow at home. And before you know it, you will be well on your way to making healthy and yummy pizzas all on your very own.

The process of making a homemade pizza from scratch can be basically done in 4 steps:

There are different kinds of pizza bases – basic, thin crust, flatbread, stuffed crust, deep dish… the list goes on. In order to keep things simple, we’ll learn the two popular types – the basic and the thin crust.

How to make a pizza base at home in half hour

Ingredients (makes two pizza bases):

  • 2 tsp instant dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (maida)

Method:

1. In a medium-sized bowl, mix the warm water, sugar and yeast. Let this rest for 10 minutes, until the yeast starts to firm. After that, add the oil to this mixture and continue mixing.

2. Add maida and salt to the yeast mixture and with your hands (or a sturdy spoon), knead until the dough is a little sticky, yet comes together in a ball.

3. If the dough is too wet, add the remaining maida, little by little, until it comes together in a ball.

4. If the dough is too dry, add a little bit of water until the desired consistency is reached.

5. Cover the bowl with a wet tea towel and let it rest for at least 10 minutes. While this dough will work just fine in 10 minutes, the longer you let it rest, the more the flavour.

6. Preheat the oven at 200 degree C. Take half of the dough on a lightly-floured rolling board and roll it out into the desired size.

7. Place it on the baking tray, coat the whole pizza crust with a little oil and bake for 10 minutes.

8. You can now take the pizza crust out and add toppings to it.

You can either make another pizza with the other half of the dough or refrigerate it for up to three days.

Did you know? If you have visitors coming, you could even knead the dough the previous day, coat the dough with oil, place it in a big bowl and refrigerate it overnight. Take it out the next day, when you are ready to make the pizza.

How to make a thin crust pizza base

Ingredients (makes two pizza bases):

  • 1 ½ tsp instant dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ¾ cup lukewarm water
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • 2 cups of maida

Method:

1. In a medium-sized bowl, mix the warm water, sugar and yeast. Let this rest for 10 minutes, until the yeast starts to foam.

2. Add the maida and salt, and knead until it is still sticky to touch, but comes together in a ball.

3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and stretch and knead for about 8 minutes.

4. Coat the ball of dough with oil, place it in a bowl, and let it rest covered for about 10 minutes.

5. Preheat your over to 250 degree C and place an empty baking tray inside.

6. Take half of the dough, and with a rolling pin, roll it out on a lightly-floured surface into a thin crust. it should be approximately 12 inches in diameter.

7. Remove the preheated baking tray from the oven, coat it with a little oil, and place the rolled-out crust on it.

8. Brush the crust with oil on top, and then proceed to add your toppings.

How to make homemade pizza sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp paprika powder
  • 2 tsp pizza seasoning
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt to taste

Method:

1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and your sauce is ready. Now you can spread the nicely whipped up sauce all over the baked pizza base. This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for a week.

Pizza toppings

Topping a pizza is fun, and is generally done in 3 quick steps:

Coat freshly-cut veggies like capsicum, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes with oil and place them on the crust.

Add grated mozzarella cheese on top. Voila you are done!

The one golden rule about adding toppings on any pizza is that – don’t follow any rules, just follow your heart. If a recipe calls for capsicum or mushroom and you don’t like it, just avoid it. You don’t have to strictly follow any rules. Go ahead and enjoy!

  • 1 pizza base
  • Pizza Sauce as required
  • ½ cup of mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 6-7 basil leaves

Method:

  1. Spread the pizza sauce over the crust.
  2. Sprinkle the chilli flakes evenly over the pizza.
  3. Add the grated cheese on top and bake in the oven at 250 degree C, for 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese melts.

Chop and toss in whatever veggies you have in the fridge. There are no hard and fast rules to this pizza.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pizza base
  • Pizza sauce as required
  • ½ cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup chopped capsicum
  • 1/8 cup sweet corn
  • ¼ cup chopped onions
  • ¼ cup, chopped tomato
  • 1 tsp olive oil

Method:

  1. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the base.
  2. Chop the veggies and coat them with oil.
  3. Add the grated cheese on top and bake in the oven at 250 degree C, for 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese melts.

How to make caramelised onion pizza

Ingredients:

  • 1 pizza base
  • Pizza sauce as required
  • ½ cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 2 onions chopped lengthwise 
  • 6 or 7 tomato slices
  • Chilli flakes as required
  • 2 tsp olive oil

Method:

1. Heat a small pan, add oil and the chopped onions. On medium flame, while constantly stirring, caramelise the onions until golden brown in colour.

2. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the base.

3. Add the caramelised onions and tomato slices.

4. Sprinkle the chilli flakes on top.

5. Add the grated cheese and bake in the oven at 250 degree C, for 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese melts.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pizza base
  • Pizza sauce as required
  • ½ cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • ¾ cup paneer cubes
  • ¼ cup mix of chopped capsicum, onion, tomato
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/8 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/8 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 pinch garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tsp oil

Method:

1. Heat oil in a small pan, and saute the onions.

2. Add tomatoes and capsicum and cook.

3. Add the spice powders and salt to taste and stir until just cooked.

4. Add the paneer and cook until just done.

5. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the base.

6. Spread the cooked paneer evenly over the pizza.

7. Add the grated cheese and bake in the oven at 250 degree C, for 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese melts.

How to make a Hawaiian pizza

This pizza is for those who like their food a little sweet and spicy at the same time. Apart from the pineapple, which is the hero of this pizza, you can optionally add whatever veggies you have in mind – capsicum, baby corn, onions, etc.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pizza base
  • Pizza sauce as required
  • ½ cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup pineapple chopped in small cubes
  • ½ cup other veggies
  • Chilli flakes

Method:

1. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the base.

2. Coat the pineapple cubes and veggies in a little oil and add them on top.

3. Now add the grated cheese and bake in the oven at 250 degree C, for 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese melts.
