Child Lock Features In Indian TV Every Parent Must Know

As parents, we go out of our way to ensure our children’s safety out of doors. We teach them to be well-behaved, to reject what is bad for them, to spurn violence and so on. But, what about the inappropriate content they are exposed to regularly at home? Television often depicts risky behaviour as cool and children, especially preteens and teens, quickly latch on. Their young minds are easily influenced by all that they see.

There is more content related to sex and violence available on the viewing screen than ever before. Exposing children to these before they are mature enough to handle it can have a negative impact on their psyche. According to the study titled, “Television viewing and aggressive behaviour during adolescence and adulthood,” there is a significant link between watching television and aggressive behaviour among adolescent children.

However, everything on television is not bad for your kids. In fact, many shows give valuable lessons. But, parents need to select programming carefully for children's viewing. These days besides basic cable, there are a plethora of options such as Netflix and Amazon Prime to choose from as well. With the advent of modern technology, it is possible for parents to restrict what the child can and cannot watch. Both basic cable and On Demand television are using this technology to great effect.

Here are some of the parental control features that you can effectively use to filter inappropriate content:

Regular cable television

Most well-known cable television service providers have options to block channels which the parents deem unfit for their children. Some even go as far as to allow the parents to block specific programming based on its maturity rating. Here is a list of some service providers and how they help you control the programming that your child gets to see.

Netflix and Amazon Prime are the latest entrants into the Indian home entertainment arena. But they are no slackers when it comes to parental control. Both have built-in controls which give parents the freedom to choose what their children can and cannot watch. Both have rich and diverse content, some of which are not child-friendly. It is essential that parents set up these controls from the word go.

This service offers three ways in which to protect your child from content that they are not old enough to handle. You would have to set a PIN for all three options.

Amazon Prime

This is also a PIN-based parental control set up. Go to prime video settings on a browser, parental controls and then prime video PIN. Enter a five digit pin and then choose to save. Restrictions here are based on maturity levels such as General, Family, Teen and Mature.

  1. Select prime video settings.
  2. Go to the viewing restrictions section.
  3. Select the maturity rating you want to block. You will have to select all the devices which are attached to the Prime account and apply these changes to those devices.

While it could be intimidating to think about all that you have to protect your child from when it comes to television viewing, it is also important to know that there is great programming out there that will help your children understand the world better. If you exercise the parental control options wisely, you can rest assured that the television will not lead your children astray.
