Cartoon characters fancy dress competitions are quite popular as cartoons are an inseparable part of the childhood and growing-up years. Children like these characters because they are always enthusiastic and entertaining. So, cartoons are very successful in not only communicating important values to children but also in improving their language and speaking skills.

Most cartoon characters nowadays address significant issues such as the importance of friendship, conflict resolution, accepting individuals who may seem different, and dealing with negative experiences like bullying, anger, disappointment and grief. Most importantly, cartoons also highlight positive qualities like determination, perseverance, responsibility, resilience and being true to oneself.

Since cartoons have such a deep effect on children, why not let your little one dress up like his favourite cartoon character? Let’s explore some fun cartoon costumes and cartoon characters fancy dress ideas!

The Mask fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Kite paper – yellow, black
  • Hat
  • Black feather
  • Clothes – white full-sleeved shirt, yellow full-length trousers, yellow jacket and colourful tie
  • Paints – green, white, red
  • A pair of scissors
  • Glue

How to make The Mask fancy dress:

  • First, cut the yellow paper and stick it to the hat to cover it entirely.
  • Cut a strip of the black paper and stick it such that it appears like a band around the hat.
  • Then tuck the feather into the band.
  • To put together the costume, the child can wear the clothes and the hat.
  • Then paint the face green. Over the mouth, paint large white teeth and outline with red paint for the lips. (Outline of lips can be done using red lipstick as well.) Lips must be outlined thick.

Dialogue to say:

“Somebody stop me!”

Tom and Jerry fancy dress

Tom fancy dress:

Materials required:

  • Chart paper – blue, white
  • Blue hairband
  • Thick rope
  • Kite paper – blue, white
  • Paint – pink, white, blue
  •  A ball of cotton
  • Glue gun
  • Clothes – blue full-sleeved T-shirt and full-length trousers

How to make a Tom fancy dress:

  • First, cut two cat ear shapes from the blue chart paper. Paint one side pink to look like the insides of the ears.
  • Stick the ears to the hairband using the glue gun.
  • Cut a large oval shape from the white chart paper. Paste it to the front of the T-shirt. Stick some cotton around the edges of this patch.
  • To make the tail, twist the blue and white kite paper around the thick rope. You can use the white paper for the tip of the tail. Attach the tail to the back of the trousers.
  • Make your child wear the clothes and the hairband. Then paint the area around the mouth white and the nose black. Paint whiskers from the mouth towards the cheeks.
  • Paint both the hands to look like the paws of a cat.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m Tom cat! Jerry and I fight a lot; but we’re still best friends!”

Jerry fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Thick paper – dark brown, light brown, white
  • Brown hairband
  • Thick rope
  • Kite paper – dark and light brown, white
  • Paint – black
  • Glue gun
  • Clothes – dark brown full-sleeved T-shirt and full-length trousers

How to make a Jerry fancy dress:

  • First cut two mouse ear shapes from the brown paper. Paint the outer edges dark brown.
  • Stick the ears to the hairband using the glue gun.
  • Cut a large oval shape from the light brown paper. Paste it to the front of the T-shirt.
  • Twist the dark brown kite paper around the thick rope to make a tail. Stick the tail to the back of the trousers.
  • Your child can now wear the clothes and the hairband. Using the black paint, paint a patch on the nose and whiskers from the mouth towards the cheeks.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m Jerry mouse! I love to annoy Tom because he’s my best friend!”

Fred Flintstone fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Orange cloth for tunic
  • Black paper
  • Paint – blue
  • A pair of scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Glue gun

How to make a Fred Flintstone fancy dress:

  • Cut the orange cloth and stitch it to resemble a knee-length tunic. Make holes for the arms and neck to pass.
  • Cut a zigzag shape all along the bottom of the tunic.
  • Draw a tie on the front part of the tunic and paint it blue. Alternatively, you could use a blue scarf as a tie.
  • Cut small triangle shapes from the black paper. Stick them to the tunic to resemble the character’s outfit.
  • The costume is now ready for your child to wear (with the scarf, if required).

Dialogue to say:

“Yabba dabba doo! I’m Fred Flintstone, and I’m from the Stone Age!”

Popeye fancy dress

Materials required:

  • White chart paper
  • Colour paper – red, yellow
  • Clothes – black half-sleeved T-shirt, blue full-length trousers
  • Paint – black, green
  • Tin can
  • A pair of scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Stapler

How to make a Popeye fancy dress:

  • To make a sailor’s hat, cut a broad strip from the white chart paper. Glue the ends together. Now cut a circle to make the base of the hat. Stick the base of strip (with ends glued together and standing straight) to the circle to complete the hat. Paint an anchor on the front side of the cap.
  • Cut two strips from the red paper. Stick these to the shirt to resemble the collar using the glue gun. Now, cut a longer strip to make the belt.
  • Cut small circles from the yellow paper. Stick these to the shirt to resemble buttons.
  • Paint the can green and then paint the word SPINACH (in black) on the can.
  • The costume is now ready. Your child can wear the clothes, put on the hat and hold the tin in one hand. Fix the yellow band around the waist by stapling the ends together. Paint anchors on each forearm.
  • For added effect, you can place some spinach leaves in the tin.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m Popeye the sailor man! I’m strong to the finish ‘cos I eat my spinach! Spinach makes you strong; so always eat your greens!”

Angry birds fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Cardboard
  • Thick white paper
  • Paint – black, white, red, yellow / orange
  • Thick rope
  • A pair of scissors
  • Red cap
  • Clothes – red T-shirt and black full-length trousers

How to make an Angry birds fancy dress:

  • Cut two large circles from the cardboard. Make sure they are large and wide enough to cover your child from below her neck to her lower thighs.
  • Make two small holes on one side of each circle.
  • Lace the ropes through the holes of one circular piece. Tie one end at the holes and leave the others loose.
  • Now tie the other ends to the other circular piece so that both the pieces are connected. Make sure you leave enough space for your child’s body as the ropes will sit on his shoulders with one piece of cardboard hanging in the front and the other at the back.
  • Now, on the side that will face the outside, paint the face of the angry bird.
  • Cut patches in the shape of feathers from the white paper and paint them black. Stick some of them to the top of the cap.
  • Paint the other piece (the part that will hang at the back) of cardboard red. Attach the remaining feathers onto the bottom.
  • To get your child to look like an angry bird, make her wear the clothes and the cap, and place the two pieces of cardboard on her shoulders.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m an angry bird. Sometimes, when I’m mad, I explode!”

Noddy fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Satin cloth – blue, yellow
  • Colour paper – red, yellow
  • Small metallic bell
  • Clothes – blue knee-length shorts, red full-sleeved shirt, red shoes
  • Glue gun
  • Needle and thread
  • Paint – light pink
  • Stapler

How to make a Noddy fancy dress:

  • First, cut small circles from the red paper. Stick them to the yellow cloth, which would be tied around the neck like a scarf.
  • Cut a strip from the yellow paper to use as a belt.
  • Stitch the blue cloth to make a pointed hat.
  • Stick the small metallic bell to the pointed end of the cap.
  • To look like Noddy, your child can wear the clothes together with the shoes and the hat. (Make sure a small tuft of hair sticks out in the front.) Tie the scarf around the neck.
  • Fix the strip of yellow paper around his waist by stapling the ends together to resemble a belt.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m Noddy from Toyland. Come on out and play!” (Child must nod his head so that the bell on the hat jingles.)

He Man fancy dress

Materials required:

  • White chart paper
  • Paint – grey, red
  • Cardboard
  • Clothes – orange shorts and knee-length socks
  • Glue
  • A pair of scissors

How to make a He Man fancy dress:

  • From the chart paper, cut two strips long enough to go across the shoulders diagonally.
  • Next, cut the shape of the centerpiece of the chest armour. Stick the long strips to this and paint everything grey.
  • Trace the design resembling a cross on the centerpiece and paint it red.
  • Trace the design of the sword on the cardboard and cut it out. Paint the sword grey.
  • Cut two broad strips from the chart paper and paint them red.
  • Make your child wear the shorts and the socks. Slip on the chest armour over the head. The two broad strips can be placed around the wrists by gluing the ends together. Now, give him the sword to hold in the right hand.

Dialogue to say:

“I’m He Man! By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!”

Donald Duck

Materials required:

  • Thick colour paper – red, yellow, blue, black
  • Yellow ribbon
  • Yellow cap
  • Elastic
  • Paint – black, white
  • Cotton
  • Ribbon – yellow, red
  • A pair of scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Clothes – blue half-sleeved shirt, yellow full-length trousers, white shorts

How to make a Donald Duck fancy dress:

  • First, insert the elastic through the hem of the shorts to make it look bunched up at the thighs.
  • Next, paint the eyes of Donald Duck on the cap.
  • For the hat, cut a broad strip from the blue paper and glue the ends together. Now, cut a circle for the base of the hat. Stick the strip (with ends glued together and standing straight) to the circle to make the hat.
  • Then, cut a small thick strip from the black paper. Cut out a small V-shape on one end. Attach the other end to the top of the blue portion on the cap such that the end with the V-shape dangles.
  • Using the glue gun, stick the blue hat to the top of the yellow cap at an angle.
  • Cut two thin strips of yellow paper and stick them to the collar of the shirt, on either side.
  • Cut two circles from the yellow paper and stick them to the shirt to resemble two buttons (on either side of the row of buttons).
  • Cut two thick strips and stick them to the cuffs of the shirt (one on each side).
  • Stick a ball of cotton on the back of the trousers to resemble the tail.
  • From the red paper, make a bow. String the red ribbon on either side to tie it around the collar.
  • From the yellow paper, trace and cut out two large shapes of webbed feet. Make holes on each and string the ribbon through so that the feet shapes can be tied around the ankles.
  • To put together the costume, make your child wear the clothes (shorts worn over the trousers) and the cap (low over eyes). Tie the bow around collar. Then place the webbed feet over the shoes and secure around the ankles with the ribbon.

Dialogue to say:

“What’s the big idea? I’m Donald Duck, a famous Disney cartoon character!”

Shaggy Rogers fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Clothes – long olive green half-sleeved T-shirt and full-length dark brown wide-leg trousers
  • Black shoes
  • Eye pencil
  • Hair gel

How to make a Shaggy Rogers fancy dress:

  • To put together the costume, make your child wear the clothes and the shoes.
  • With the eye pencil, draw a few lines on the chin to resemble a short scruffy beard.
  • Apply hair gel and comb the hair for added effect.

Dialogue to say:

“Zoinks! I’m Shaggy Rogers, a member of Mystery Inc.”

Scooby Doo fancy dress

Materials required:

  • Chart paper – black, white
  • Elastic string
  • Glue gun
  • Rope
  • Brown full-sleeved T-shirt and full-length trousers
  • Paint – brown, black, blue, yellow
  • Stapler

How to make a Scooby Doo fancy dress:

  • To make the mask, trace Scooby’s face on the white chart paper. Cut it out and paint it.
  • Make holes on either side of the mask and string the elastic through so that the mask can be worn easily.
  • Cut different-sized patches from the black chart paper. Stick these to the front and back of the T-shirt.
  • Cut a small strip and a small square shape of white paper. These would make the collar and the small ornament on the collar. Paint them blue. Paint small yellow spots on the ornament. Attach it to the middle of the collar.
  • Cut a length of rope for the tail and paint it brown.
  • Your child can wear the clothes and the mask. Attach the tail to the back of the trousers. Fix the collar around the neck by stapling the ends together. Paint your child’s nose black. Also, paint the hands to resemble Scooby’s paws.

Dialogue to say:

“Woof woof! Scooby-dooby-doo!”
