In dealing with fears and phobias three things are important – validating the child’s fears; helping the child learn a relaxing response; introducing the child to the feared situation in graded steps while assisting them to practice the relaxing response at the same time. Stories, songs, games and pretend-play are effective tools to help young children work through their fears. Let's now look at each situation.
