When you are 30,000 feet high up in the sky, the last thing you want is a child screaming or throwing tantrums because of boredom. Here we tell you how to keep a toddler engaged while flying

Here is a typical situation -- your tickets to the exotic destination have been delivered and the whole family is quite excited about the big holiday that you have been planning for a long time. You take pains to ensure everything is in place so that there are no problems and the day of the long flight has finally arrived. You get into the plane and a few minutes into the journey, your toddler starts acting up. He fidgets and fusses because he is not able to occupy himself with anything. If you were looking forward to a relaxed flight without any disturbances, this can be the worst scenario.
Everyone knows that travelling with a toddler on a flight is not for the faint-hearted. Toddlers throw a tantrum due to various reasons. In a flight however, it is primarily because of restricted space and differences in air pressure. The more we try to make them stay in one place, the more they get agitated.
But it does not have to be that way. Just as you took pains to plan the holiday, take a few minutes to plan how you can keep your child happy and occupied while flying. This article tells you how you can productively engage your toddler, so that there are no tantrums and your next flight is a peaceful one.
Here is a list of tips and tricks you can use:
Before boarding a flight try using some videos and attractive books to teach your child what a flight is all about. When you explain to your child that travelling in a flight is a big milestone for her, then she will be more than willing to cooperate. Show her videos on safety measures such as fastening the seat belt and how important it is for her to stay seated. Don’t make it scary, make it fun. If possible, pick up a small model plane for her, which will get her excited.
This is a great activity to do during long flights. You can carry your child’s favourite colours and colouring books to keep her occupied. It goes a long way in calming your little one’s nerves especially during take-offs and landing. These days most of the airlines offer interesting toys and activity kits for travellers with children.
It is always a good idea to carry a colourful book for your toddler. If your toddler can read, take along some of his favourite reads. If your child has not begun to read, you can always read a story to him. Just in case you have forgotten to take a book for the journey, you can always pick one at the airport book store.
You can lend your smartphone to your child to play some appropriate games during the flight or carry a tablet for him, after loading it with a few children’s animation films. All you need is some ear phones and its sorted. But make sure that the time the toddler uses a device should be restricted, otherwise it can tire them out.
Carry some sticker activity books. The market is filled with huge bumper sticker activity books. Sticking activities keep them occupied for longs hours and are perfect for long flights.
Keep him occupied by talking to him. Long plane journeys are perfect opportunities for bonding with your child. It is an ideal time to educate them on how planes function or to tell funny stories about flying. You can also share your own childhood travel experiences.
It is important that you carry your child’s favourite toy as it gives them a sense of security and familiarity. This has a psychological effect on them. It also keeps them busy for hours.
Always watch out for ear aches. The best way to handle this is to hand them some lollies. Chewing on their favourite candy will keep the pain at bay. But you should be the best judge of how many they can have.
Right after reaching your destination make sure to reward you little one for good behaviour. This acts as a motivation for the future.
These tips are sure to help you when your child gets cranky during the flight. There are a few other things you can do to prevent tantrums.
Try booking a direct flight. This avoids stressing the child out.
Early bookings: If you want to avoid crowded counters and long lines try booking the first flight and also try web check-ins. These days everything is possible with the just click of a button.
