Picnics are a great way to spend the day outdoors and enjoy the weather. We give you a round-up of 10 must-see places from 5 cities across India that will guarantee you have a wonderful time with your family.

Chennai

Pulicat: This less frequented picnic spot makes for an ideal family weekend getaway, especially if your children are inclined to bird watching. A historic town nestling in the borders of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Pulicat boasts of some forts, a lighthouse and Dutch cemeteries. This quaint town rolls out into the sea to touch the backwaters. 

You can take a boat ride to reach one of the small islands that intersperse the lake. The islands offer clean beaches, fresh breeze and the much-wanted quiet. Children will lap up the open spaces. Poorly laid roads, dangerous waters and absence of restrooms are the things to be prepared for while visiting Pulicat with children. Visit the place in winter to watch migratory birds such as painted storks and pelicans.

DakshinaChitra: Take your children to DakshinaChitra so they learn about the rich and varied South Indian culture. The facility offers clean food, drinking water and free parking as well.

Trivandrum

Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary: This gravity dam is a popular picturesque picnic spot from where you can see miles of clear blue water touch the azure horizon. You can hire a speed boat to go around the island and to visit the lion, deer and crocodile parks. A safari to the lion park will cost you ₹ 250 per person. The aquarium near the dam is a must-visit.

Kovalam Beach: This celestial beach in God’s own country is known for its diversity. There is a lighthouse that offers a glorious view of the sea. Beside the lighthouse is the Vizhinjam marine aquarium (9 am to 5.30 pm) that will transport your child to the world of tropical fish. 

Older children can have a lot of fun at adventure sports like boating and windsurfing. The Veli tourist village, open between 8 am and 6 pm, offers boat rides and children particularly love the fact that they can romp about here unfettered.

Bengaluru

Lalbagh Botanical Gardens: This verdant spot in the South of Bangalore provides a breath of fresh air after the long week in the city. Spanning 240 acres, the lush lawns and resplendent red roses are a treat to the eyes. You can take a golf cart ride for a little under ₹ 100 to get a view of the entire garden. 

The garden is home to the largest collection of tropical plants in India. Carry your sandwiches and short-eats to munch on. You can play a game of chase or even a round of badminton if the wind is low. The glass house modelled after the crystal palace at London and the aquarium are other attractions.

Bannerghatta National Park: A wildlife lover’s delight, the Bannerghatta National park comprises a zoo, an animal rescue centre, a butterfly park, a snake house and a pet corner. The safari park, which is the prime attraction, includes a bear, lion and tiger safari, where you can be certain of spotting some wild cats. The park also has a lake where boat rides can be availed. This is a one-stop destination for a child to get an audio-visual experience of nature and learn about the fast disappearing flora and fauna. Carry your own food and water if you’d rather eat hygienic.

Delhi

Damdama Lake: Damdama lake is a quick get-away from the metropolitan city. The tourist spot allures picnickers with its greenery. Activities include rock climbing, horse riding, boating, hot-air ballooning, bungee jumping, kayaking and parasailing. Amidst the rocky Aravalli Hills, covering an area of about 3000 acres, lies a photographer’s paradise. The lake is home to about 200 species of migratory as well as local birds. Accommodations are available along the lake that offer both day trips and overnight packages. Camel riding and other facilities like indoor and outdoor games at the scenic location leaves one enraptured by nature.

Lodi Garden: Situated between Khan Market and Safdarjung Tomb lies the Lodi Gardens which is spread over 90 acres – ample space for your child to gambol. Protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, the city park is dotted with magnificent tombs such as the Tomb of Mohammed Shah and the Tomb of Sikander Lodi. You also get to see domes such as the Bara Gumbad and the Shisha Gumbad, which have been kept in good condition. The picturesque garden is a significant place of preservation where your child can explore and admire the beautiful 15th century architecture.

Mumbai
